Middle Township is a municipality in Cape May County, New Jersey, a part of the Ocean City Metropolitan Statistical Area. United States Census data reported the township’s population at 18,911 in 2018, up of 2,506 (+15.3%) from the previous census of 16,405 people. Middle Township was established as a precinct on April 2, 1723. It was incorporated as one of the 104 townships of New Jersey by the Township Act of 1798 of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798.
A substantial area of the township is located along the Delaware Bay, where several wetlands and salt marshes provide a natural habitat for shore and migrating birds. In late May and early June, millions of shore birds flock to the area each year to dine on horseshoe crab eggs deposited along the bay’s beach.
Middle Township is the County Seat and has a long and illustrious history. Many buildings established more than a century ago may still be seen today as visitors drive through the picturesque, historic district on Main Street. Many bayside communities started as fishing villages and now offer great saltwater and freshwater fishing.
